Ready, set, go! 5 active events around the country to get your whole family moving

Better dust off those trainers.

WE’RE ALL AWARE of the benefits that come with being active, so why not give the whole family a reason to exercise by signing up to a child-friendly fitness event?

From a 5km walk in the early hours to an 8km intense obstacle course, we’ve rounded up five events around the country that are sure to get your heart racing…

Darkness Into Light on May 11: Taking place in 19 countries around the world on May 11, hundreds of thousands of people will get together to walk 5km from the darkness of night into the light of morning in aid of Pieta House. Participants of all ages are welcome – but just bear in mind the 4:15 am start time! 

Suits: all ages. When: May 11. Where: around the country (and the world!). Costs: adult, €25; 6-17 years, €5; under 5s, free. Find out more information here

Colour Dash in June: Raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society while being covered in a different colour at each kilometre mark of this 5km run. There are no age limits, once the participant can cover 5km running or walking, although push chairs aren’t allowed.

Suits: all ages. When: throughout June. Where: Galway, Limerick, Cork and Dublin. Costs: adult, €30; child, €5. Find out more information here.

Hell & Back Family in June and October: Not for the faint-hearted, Hell & Back is Ireland’s toughest physical and mental challenge, covering 8km of obstacles, including ice baths, a water jump and a grueling tyre zone. 

Suits: 10 years+. When: 15 and 16 June, 5 October. Where: Killruddery Estate, Bray, Co Wicklow. Costs: from €80. Find out more information here.

Junior Parkrun every Sunday: Taking place in 19 parks and outdoor areas around the country, Junior Parkrun is a series of 2km runs for 4 to 14-year-olds. All Parkrun events are free, but participants must register online first.

Suits: 4-14 years. When: every Sunday. Where: around the country. Costs: free. Find out more information here

Rock ‘n’ Roll Family Fun Run on 11 August: If you don’t fancy doing the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, head along to the family-friendly race with the little ones. It covers 1.5 miles (about 2.4km) and participants can walk or run.

Suits: all ages. When: 11 August. Where: Chesterfield Avenue, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8. Costs: €10. Find out more information here.
