Garda Ombudsman fines off-duty garda over collision

An investigation by the Garda Ombudsman heard that the garda left the scene of the collision and returned later in a different vehicle.

A GARDA HAS been fined for colliding with a pedestrian as he drove his own vehicle while off-duty.

An investigation by the Garda Ombudsman heard that the garda left the scene of the collision and returned to the scene later in a different vehicle. The pedestrian was brought to hospital with a foot injury following the collision which occurred as he was crossing a road.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission decided to further investigate after a file on the case was referred to the Director of Public Prosecution who directed that no prosecution should be initiated

The Ombudsman found that the garda’s conduct – including providing false or inaccurate information about what happened – amounted to two counts of  discreditable conduct for a garda.

The Ombudsman said that a monetary penalty was imposed in respect of each breach of conduct but did not disclose how much money the garda had to pay.
