A MAN IN his forties is in garda custody in connection with an attack on a woman in her twenties at Evergreen Road in Cork city.

The man is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to 24 hours before he is either released or charged.

The man was arrested earlier this afternoon near the scene of the attack on the southside of Cork city. The woman, who is in her twenties, sustained a stab wound in the incident.

She is understood to have undergone surgery at Cork University Hospital this afternoon. Her condition is not life threatening in nature.

A Garda Helicopter was deployed in the manhunt which followed the attack on the woman, and it’s further understood that members of the Garda Armed Support Unit were also called in to deal with the incident. 

The woman was tended to at the scene by paramedics, before being transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

A garda spokesperson said that as this is an ongoing incident, no further information is available at this time.
