LAST UPDATE | 7 Jun

FIOSRÚ, THE GARDA watchdog, is investigating the death of a man in custody in Dublin.

It is understood that the man who died was in custody after being arrested for breaching bail.

The garda watchdog received a referral from gardaí on Saturday, made by a Garda Superintendent as gardaí must refer to Fiosrú as a matter of course, following any injury or death in custody.

This section calls for a Garda Commissioner to “without delay” refer to the Police Ombudsman any matter that appear to “indicate that the act or omission of a member of garda personnel may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person”.

Fiosrú’s on call team of investigators have attended the scene.

A spokesperson for Fiosrú said that as the incident is now under investigation, it cannot make any further comment.
