TRANSPORT MINISTER LEO Varadkar has reappointed Gay Byrne as chairman of the Road Safety Authority.
The broadcaster will now continue in the role for another five-year term.
“Gay has worked tirelessly to promote road safety over the past five years,” Varadkar said in a statement announcing the appointment. “He has also fulfilled his duties as chairman of the RSA in an exemplary manner.”
The decision comes after Byrne’s recent appearance at the Oireachtas Transport Committee during which he outlined the RSA’s “significant progress” in improving safety levels and reducing road deaths over the past five years.
Last night, the RSA launched a new road safety online short film called Loaded Weapon on YouTube.
The shocking film, based on an idea from UCC student Richard Lahart, captures the often reckless and irresponsible behaviour of young adults as they drive.
Meanwhile, another film about road safety held its premiere in Letterkenny, Donegal last night. Young Europe by Italian director Matteo Vicino follows the stories of three young Europeans before they are involved in car crashes.
