By-Elections

Government to hold by-election this month

Chief Whip John Curran has said he expects the by-election to take place by the end of the November.

FOLLOWING THE DECISION by the High Court earlier today regarding the Donegal by-election the government has announced that it is to appeal to the Supreme Court.

RTÉ reports that Chief Whip John Curran has said, however, that the government will hold the Donegal by-election forthwith and the writ will be moved straight away.

Curran says that he expects the by-election to take place by the end of this month.

The Green Party put pressure on the government earlier today by announcing that the should take place as soon as possible.

The High Court ruled this morning there has been an “unreasonable” delay  by the Government in moving the writ for the Donegal South-West by-election.

The seat in the constituency been vacant since June of last year – the longest in the history of the State. The time period also represents a significant proportion of the five-year Dáil term.
