AN ARMY BOMB Disposal Team rendered safe a grenade in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford this evening.
The device was described as “a historic yet viable Mills-type grenade”.
It was found during a garden excavation in the Kilcarbery area.
The Defence Forces deployed the bomb disposal team following a request from gardaí.
The team arrived on the scene at 5.20 pm and the device was safely transported to an open green area for a controlled explosion.
The scene was declared safe at 6.10 pm.
In a statement released tonight, the Defence Forces said that this type of grenade is early twentieth century era and would have been in use during the War of Independence, the Civil War and World Wars 1 and 2.
