IT’S A WICKLOW ESTATE that over the years has opened its doors to The Beatles, Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson, and now it could be yours. If you have the money.
The 18th century lodge at Luggala sits on the breathtaking Lough Tay and has been the backdrop for films such as Zardoz, King Arthur and Excalibur.
Its owner Garech Browne (the great-great-great-grandson of Arthur Guinness) once hosted an array of poets and musicians – but has decided to sell up as he now splits his time between London and Singapore.

The 5,000-acre estate includes two Irish oak woods and a beach overlooking Lough Tay with white sand imported by the Guinness family to resemble a pint of Guinness.
Along with Luggala Lodge, there are seven additional estate houses and cottages scattered throughout the estate, amounting to a total of 27 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
Luggala’s 18th-century architecture became known as ‘Strawberry Hill Gothic’, a style that is echoed in many English estates, identifiable by the quatrefoil windows and limestone obelisks scattered around the main building.
The main lodge features three spacious reception rooms and a number of smaller chambers containing seven bedrooms, while the guest lodge contains four, and the seven estate lodges comprise the last 16 bedrooms.
The accommodation throughout the estate extends over an impressive 1,521 square metres or 16,379 feet.
The estate even contains a dock, a wine cellar, a library, stables, a tennis court, a boat house and both an indoor and outdoor pool.
Bono once said of the beautiful estate, “Luggala has turned out to be our inspiration”, while English singer and actress Marianne Faithful called it, “The most beautiful place in the world. It has everything you need but without any external stimulant.”
