The hot spell is expected to continue well into next week. Rolling News

Cork added to 13-county heat warning as temperatures soar towards 30 degrees

Met Éireann says temperatures could potentially reach over 30 degrees in some areas next week.

LAST UPDATE | 9 mins ago

THE SPELL OF very warm and increasingly hot weather is set to continue across Ireland this weekend, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 29 degrees and heatwave conditions likely to persist into next week.

Met Éireann has a Status Yellow high temperature warning in place for 13 counties from 1pm today until 7am on Sunday, warning of daytime temperatures above 27 degrees and overnight lows remaining above 15 degrees.

The warning covers Carlow, Cork, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath and Wexford.

Today is expected to be “very warm or hot” across much of the country, with highs of between 21 and 29 degrees. The warmest conditions are forecast for the south, while western and northwestern counties will be somewhat cooler.

The hot spell is expected to continue through the weekend, with temperatures again reaching 28 or 29 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

While eastern coastal areas will stay slightly cooler, warm and humid nights are also forecast, with temperatures in some places not dropping below 19 degrees overnight.

Met Éireann has also issued a nationwide weather advisory, warning that the prolonged spell of hot weather is expected to last into next week.

Forecasters say daytime temperatures will “widely exceed 25 degrees”, with values climbing into the high 20s and possibly the low 30s in some areas by the middle of next week.

The advisory warns of potential impacts including heat stress, dehydration, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, wildfire risk and increased water safety concerns as more people head to beaches, lakes and rivers.

The forecaster is also warning that UV levels will be high to very high over the coming days, with the possibility of thundery showers developing later next week before temperatures return closer to average towards next weekend.

Ireland’s heatwave comes as much of Europe continues to endure extreme temperatures.

Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece have all faced heat alerts in recent days, while authorities in southern Spain are battling a deadly wildfire in Andalusia that has claimed at least 12 lives.

Recurring heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of global warming.
