Here’s all the news you need to know to start the day.

Assault

1. An Indian man was allegedly attack by a group of teenagers in Citywest, Co Dublin after they asked where he was from.

Arunabha Ray, an Irish citizen who has been living here for ten years, told The Journal that he was approached by a teenage boy while out for his evening walk in Carrigmore Park on Saturday 4 July.

He said the teenager stood in front of him and asked him where he was from, and when he answered India, the teen shouted at his three nearby friends and they began to punch him.

Moygashel

2. A loyalist bonfire was lit a day early after police began an operation to remove a replica of a mosque from the top of the pyre.

The PSNI said it had launched a “significant and complex policing operation to remove a hate display” from the top of the bonfire in Moygashel, Co Tyrone, which was at an advanced stage when the bonfire was lit. 

A 56-year-old man has been charged with incitement to hatred and is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Energy security

3. Ireland is still “heavily dependent” on imported fossil fuels despite growth in renewable energy, according to new data from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

Imported fuels still dominate the country’s energy system with almost four-fifths (78.2%) of Ireland’s energy requirement imported last year, substantially higher than the EU average of 57.3%.

Almeria

4. In Spain, at least 12 people have been killed in a wildfire in the south of the country as a heatwave continues to stifle swathes of the country.

The regional government said some of the dead in Bédar, a municipality in Almeria province in the autonomous community of Andalusia, were found in vehicles.

Heat warning

5. Back at home, the spell of very warm and increasingly hot weather is set to continue across the country this weekend, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 29 degrees and heatwave conditions likely to persist into next week.

Met Éireann has a Status Yellow high temperature warning in place for 12 counties from 1pm today until 7am on Sunday, warning of daytime temperatures above 27 degrees and overnight lows remaining above 15 degrees.

Heel prick test

6. Irish MEP Billy Kelleher is pushing for expanded testing of rare conditions in newborns, to bring Ireland in line with our EU counterparts.

Kelleher, a Fianna Fáil member who sits in the Renew grouping in the European Parliament, told journalists in Strasbourg this week that Ireland is far behind some of our European neighbours when it comes to early diagnosis of rare conditions.

7. The medieval Bayeux Tapestry has arrived in London after a hugely complicated journey to leave France for the first time in more than 900 years for an exhibition in the British capital.

The 11th-century work, which France has loaned to Britain in what president Emmanuel Macron called “a tangible expression of long-standing friendship”, will be displayed at the British Museum from 10 September to 11 July 2027.

Iran

8. Donald Trump has briefed Benjamin Netanyahu about US operations in the Gulf, the Israeli prime minister’s office said, after Iran reported fresh American strikes.

“As part of the continuous contact” between the two, “President Trump updated the Prime Minister on American moves in the Gulf,” Netanyahu’s office said in a message on X.

Les Bleus

9. Second-half strikes from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé helped France progress through to the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup with a routine victory over Morocco in Boston.

Mbappé scored his eighth goal of the tournament and went level with Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring charts in search of the golden boot.
