THE EDITOR OF The Evening Herald has apologised after the paper published a picture of English musician Stormzy and labelled him as Belgian footballer Romelu Lukaku.

The main story on the back page of today’s Herald features a story about Lukaku’s transfer to Manchester United but the picture accompanying it is of Stomzy in the club’s tracksuit.

The mistake, which has been shared widely online, has been trending on Twitter across the UK.

It has also been covered by a number of major UK news outlets including BBC News and The Independent.

In a statement after the mix-up went viral, editor of the Herald Alan Steenson said the mistake was a “picture error”. The apology read:

Hands up, we got it badly wrong. Earlier, we made an error with a picture of Romelu Lukaku that wasn’t him. It was Stormzy. To be honest, we are totally embarrassed and want to say sorry to all involved and our readers for the error. We will keep our eye on the ball in future.

Stormzy, who plays the Longitude festival in Dublin on Friday, has previously acknowledged that he does share a resemblance with Lukaku.

Speaking on Channel 4′s Sunday Brunch earlier this year, Stormzy laughed about their similarity.

“I’m not going to lie, every time I see him, I just look at it and I think, yeah, you do mate,” he said.

Reacting to this particular incident however, Stormzy tweeted that he didn’t find a newspaper mistaking the pair to be a laughing matter:

In another response to someone who said that he should “get a sense of humour”, Stormzy further tweeted:
