4 of a kind: Homes with bay windows that make the most of natural light

From a terraced redbrick in Clontarf to a mansion overlooking Cork city.

YOU MIGHT NOT start your property search with a bay window at the top of your priority list, but it’s hard to argue that the feature isn’t appealing.

Whether you’re keen to live in a light-filled property, love the idea of a ready-made window seat inside, or just fancy a home with a classic exterior, a bay window is a delightful architectural addition to any home.

These four properties around the country have that classic bay window look – and plenty of extra character beyond…

Salthill, Galway — €700,000

This three-bedroom, two-bathroom detached home in Salthill features bay windows on both sides of a cheerful yellow door. Inside, the home’s period details have been preserved, but the current owners have updated and modernised much of the interior. The kitchen/dining area has a large glass door that opens onto the deck.

Outside, there are two entrances for parking, a hedged front garden and a large back garden with a wooden deck and BBQ area. The garden is private and secluded, with the potential to expand in the future.

It’s on the market for €700,000.

Clontarf, Dublin 3 – €595,000

Homes around Mt Prospect Grove were mainly built in the 1950s, although the terraced redbrick style with a bay window to the front speaks more to the Edwardian era. This three-bedroom, one-bathroom home north of Dublin city has a cobblelock driveway. Large glass doors enter onto the south-facing patio, and the back garden has a garage as well. The home is located a fifteen minute walk to the coast promenade.

Inside, there is a bay window letting light into the open plan living/dining area with the original fireplace. Upstairs, there is another bay window in the front bedroom upstairs.

You could move in for €595,000.

Montenotte, Cork — €1,350,000

A five-bedroom, five-bathroom space, Arbutus Lodge in the Cork suburbs offers an expanse of space, anchored by two bay windows at the front. Built in 1820 for a wealthy merchant, the property has also been the site of a Michelin-starred hotel and restaurant.

Now, the property has been returned to a home, but you’ll still enjoy quite a few of the amenities that made it a much-loved spot to stay. The driveway fits up to ten cars, the kitchen and dining area looks out over the garden, and the entrance hall is grand, as are the reception and living rooms. The views might be one of the best aspects, though, overlooking Cork city from quite a few of those bay windows.

You could enjoy those views for €1,350,000.
