Irish man arrested at Lisbon airport after alleged assault of police officers

Luis Neves, Portugal’s Minister of Internal Administration, described the violence as “absolutely unacceptable.”

AN IRISH MAN has been arrested in Portugal after allegedly assaulting police officers at Lisbon Airport.

Footage of the 26-year-old appearing to attack another person was shared on social media overnight.

The incident occurred just after 4pm on Monday in the baggage claim area.

Police said the man, who they have confirmed is an Irish national, had previously assaulted an airport worker in an incident which was also filmed by onlookers.

The police involved are said to have sustained “serious injuries.”

“The Public Security Police (PSP), through the Lisbon Airport Security and Border Control Division of the National Unit for Foreigners and Borders, arrested a 26-year-old Irish national in the baggage claim area of Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon,” Portuguese police said in their statement.

“Shortly before the police intervention, the suspect allegedly assaulted an employee of Menzies Aviation near the Versailles café, located on the fifth floor of the airport terminal.

“After PSP officers arrived at the scene, the individual adopted an extremely violent and aggressive attitude, physically attacking the officers who were attempting to restore order and restrain him.

“As a result of the assaults, the PSP officers sustained serious injuries, including trauma and facial wounds, requiring medical treatment.

Police also confirmed that the man was taken to temporary holding facilities in Lisbon.

“Assaulting a law enforcement officer is unacceptable and constitutes an attack on the proper performance of police duties and on the rule of law,” police added in a statement.

“The PSP will therefore continue to act firmly against this type of behaviour, holding those responsible criminally accountable for their actions.”

Luis Neves, Portugal’s Minister of Internal Administration, described the violence as “absolutely unacceptable.”

The arrested man is expected to appear in court later today.
