Irish priest charged with child sex abuse in Sydney

Fr Finian Egan, 77, was charged on Monday with 17 offences relating to alleged assaults on four children between 1972 and 1987.

A RETIRED IRISH Catholic priest living in Australia who has been accused sexually abusing children has been charged by police in Sydney.

Fr Finian Egan, 77, was charged on Monday with 17 offences relating to alleged assaults on four children between 1972 and 1987.

He has denied all allegations.

Police first received complaints about Egan in 2010, according to ABC News.

Egan was previously investigated by the Catholic church after two sisters alleged he had groped them in the 1980s. The church’s independent assessor upheld the claims and he was subsequently suspended, however he was allowed to officiate at eight services while under investigation, the Brisbane Times reports.

Police have said that investigations are continuing.
