People in Dublin asked to conserve water and check for leaks ahead of sub-zero temperatures

Irish Water experienced a higher than normal volume of bursts during the cold snap earlier this month.

IRISH WATER IS asking homes and businesses across the Greater Dublin Area (GDA) to check for leaks and to conserve water ahead of expected freezing temperatures over the coming days.

Earlier this month, following freezing temperatures and the subsequent thaw, the public water network experienced a higher than normal volume of bursts.

Irish Water and local authorities in the GDA carried out hundreds of leak and burst repairs arising from the cold snap.

Almost 40 megalitres per day, the equivalent of 16 olympic sized swimming pools, has been saved following the completion of these repairs and through the efforts of the public to conserve water.

“Demand for water whilst still high, it has stabilised as Irish Water working with our local authority partners continues to address bursts across the network,” Irish water head of operations Tom Cuddy said.

However, as we face another spell of sub-zero temperatures from tonight we are appealing to homes, businesses and those responsible for unoccupied buildings to check for leaks whilst adhering to current public health regulations and advice, and to turn off water where it’s not needed.

Irish Water is also appealing to customers to check outside pipes in particular that can become frozen and burst during periods of cold weather and report leaks they see on the public network to us.

“We are also asking the public to conserve water where possible and to only use what they need whilst continuing to adhere to public health advice on hand washing and hygiene regarding Covid-19,” Cuddy said.

Leaks can be reported to Irish Water on 1850 278 278.

@Eoin McLove: Rain has zero to do with it. Its the amount of new builds over the decades and the lack of keeping up with the growing demand. It could rain for months and it wouldn’t make a difference. They can’t keep up with producing fresh water, it’s no good laying in the rivers and lakes.

@John Lally: They could put an extra 1% tax on luxury goods & raise money that way. There’s no way anyone wants to have to pay this cr@@@y company’s directors massive pay + bonus cars laughing yoga classes ECT ECT. The amount of money they have & still are wasting is dredful, had that money been used properly we would have a fantastic water system.

@Dixieblue: You don’t pay enough. I pay for my own water supply, and if you are correct and you pay for water through current taxation them I’m paying part of the cost of your water as well as paying for my own. Should taxes be increased to give a tax credit to those who don’t avail of IW supplied water, or should taxes be increased to raise the billions it would require to run water and sewage pipes to every house in the country not currently serviced by IW ? I mean, it’s only fair that me and thousands like me are not forced to pay twice for water as we currently do, right ? Coz paying twice is totally unfair, isn’t that what ye always say ?

Didn’t FF promise that they would abolish Irish Water? Once they got their feet under the table that promise, like others, went out the window. A day of reckoning is coming I think. When politicians tell too many lies, the electorate eventually respond. Look what happened in the States when the establishment continuously ignored the wishes of the majority of voters for the benefit of the few in the Corporate world.

@Jack Cass: i could be wrong but didn’t FF promise to abolish irish water charges and not Irish water and that was the election before, which they were in opposition , I could easily be wrong, also when parties make election promises its on the understanding that they are in power on their own not in a coalition, once a party enters into a coalition, they have to agree a program for government with the other parties, again I could be totally wrong.

@daniel roche: In the run-up to the 2016 GE, FF promised that they would abolish Irish Water. Shortly after they agreed to the C&S with FG, they voted to retain Irish Water and charge for excess usage. The 1977 GE was the last time there was a single party Government, and that trend does not look like changing any time soon, so does that mean party manifesto’s are fiction as they will not be implemented? Maybe politicians and political parties should canvass on Programme’s for Government with their desired coalition partners instead of Manifesto’s?

@Jack Cass: okay election promise from 2016,which they didn’t win and weren’t in government, yes agree with you about the election promises but every party in Ireland does it and in their fine print its on the basis of being in government on there own, every party is guilty of it.

Wouldn’t it be great if our government hadn’t wasted so much money intended to upgrade our infrastructure? Imagine how many Irish people would by now have the use of a few Olympic-sized pools? Without having to move county to even see what one looks like
