THE DUBLINERS’ JIM McCann has died, aged 70.
Tributes have been pouring in for the balladeer today, led by President Michael D Higgins who said he was saddened by his death.
“Throughout the years, Jim McCann has captivated audiences, both at home and abroad, with his superb and instantly recognisable singing voice,” he wrote in a statement.
McCann began his career with the Ludlow Trio in the 1960s, before becoming a solo artist and singer with The Dubliners.
Many people are sharing what the President has described as his “very unique and personal rendition” of the song Grace today.
It gives him a special place in the collective Irish memory, according to Higgins.
McCann is survived by his wife Phyl and former Dubliner John Sheahan.
Tánaiste Joan Burton also expressed her sympathies on Twitter.
