MULTINATIONAL FIRE AND security company, Tyco, is to set up a business services centre in Cork and will require up to 500 employees, it was announced this afternoon.

Speaking from the jobs announcement in Cork, Minister Richard Bruton said the firm’s move into the city could “potentially create more than 500 positions locally over three years”.

Tyco has started the recruitment process – in the form of an examination of the local talent pool – and vacancies are being advertised on its website. The company is looking to fill roles in finance, procurement, HR, IT, legal, project management, research and development, customer service, and administration.

IDA Ireland’s Barry O’Leary noted that the centre will “provide opportunities for candidates with a variety of educational backgrounds”.

He also said that Ireland has improved its cost competitiveness in recent years – Tyco had closed two facilities in Shannon and Cork in 2008, citing cost competitiveness as a reason for leaving.

“We chose Ireland for this centre to take advantage of the country’s knowledge base and successful record of supporting operations centres like these,” explained Phil McVey, Tyco Business System’s vice president.

“With 140 similar centres already located here that support companies based around the world, we were attracted to Ireland’s expertise and culture of innovation, as well as the availability of a strong technical workforce that can hit the ground running to support a range of functional areas.”

Currently, Tyco employs more than 65,000 people in 1,000 locations across 50 countries.
