Labour conference to focus on education, jobs

Plus, leader Eamon Gilmore will give his live televised speech tonight from 8.30pm.

THE 66TH ANNUAL Labour Party conference continues in Galway today, where the schedule is expected to focus on education, healthcare and jobs.

Leader Eamon Gilmore will also address the 800 delegates during a live televised speech tonight from 8.30pm.

Earlier today, Education Minister Ruairi Quinn opened a debate on education, where motions were heard on the reintroduction of third level fees.

There were two proposed motions calling for the State to cease paying teachers at private schools to level off  the pupil-teacher ratio at non-fee paying schools.

The full schedule can be seen on Labour’s website here.

The debate on fairness in the health service began at 10am, which heard motions on the increased role of the pharmacist in Ireland, the introduction of a carers’ strategy and care of the elderly.

Motions on the organisation and structure of the party will be heard this afternoon after an address by guest speaker Vernon Coaker, MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
