Man drowns after slipping off bridge wall in Athlone

The man’s body was recovered from the River Shannon.

THE BODY OF a man has been recovered from the River Shannon in Athlone after he slipped into the water last night.

The man in his early 50s was on the wall of the Westmeath town bridge when he slipped and fell into the water at around 11.30pm last night.

A search was carried out by gardaí and his body was later recovered by the RNLI and Athlone sub-aqua club.

The body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mulligar where a post mortem will be carried out.
