8 reasons the Mercedes-Maybach Landaulet is the most ridiculously opulent off-roader

Show off how much money you have in this ultra-luxe G-Wagen.

MERCEDES HAS ANNOUNCED production of the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, its most swanky and ludicrous G-Class off-roader yet.

Following on the Mercedes-Maybach S Class and the S 650 Cabriolet, the open-top G Class is the first off-roader from the Mercedes-Maybach luxury sub-brand.

The luxury wagon has almost a half-metre of ground clearance and this combined with its four-wheel drive and 22-inch tyres make it perfect for scrambling over huge piles of money or wading through your moat.

The G 650 Landaulet is essentially a chauffeur-driven off-roader. It started out as a basic humble G-wagen – but then Mercedes added the portal axles of the mega aggressive G-Class 4×4 Squared, inserted the twin-turbocharged V12 of  the G 65 AMG, and stretched the wheelbase by 57.8 cm.

Oh, and they threw in the first-class rear seats from the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class for good measure. To top things off (quite literally) they have replaced the rear part of the  fixed roof with a power-operated fabric top.

1. It will most likely be accompanied by Greenpeace activists

Under that giant hood is a monster engine from AMG – the 6.0-litre V12 biturbo – delivering a massive 630hp and 1,000Nm, which makes light work of moving around the three-tonne-plus weight of the vehicle. The Mercedes fuel economy figure is a laughable 17 litres/100km (16.6mpg) although its ozone-killing CO2 emissions of 397g/km are a little less funny.

2. It’s like having your own personal masseuse

The G 650 has a glass partition that separates the rear passengers from the driver. This glass can change from transparent to opaque at the push of a button. This mean that those in the back can enjoy all the amenities and luxuries in private.

Those luxuries include the electric multi-adjustable individual fully reclining seats with energizing massage function, natch. There is also a calf rest, which is adjustable in length and swivel range, which means you can rest your weary legs after a long hard day of buying and selling countries.

3. And your own personal butler

Furthermore, while you enjoy your well-earned massage, the thermal cup holders in the central console between the seats will ensure your expensive Champagne remains chilled and your exotic rare coffee stays at exactly your preferred temperature.

4. It’s perfect for getting loads of work done

The centre console also comes with two tables, folded in or out with one hand. These have leather inserts to provide a comfortable writing surface for signing cheques for vast sums of money with ease, or to allow the use of diamond encrusted tablets and notebooks.

5. And perfect for getting no work done

In front of you is the G-Cockpit which houses a switch to operate the interior lighting, making sure you are always perfectly lit. It also holds a glass partition that accommodates two 25.4cm (10-inch) high-resolution media displays of the Individual Entertainment System. This will help make sure you never miss an episode of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

6. It’s perfect for surveying your land and waving at your baying fans

When you want to top up your tan or just let everyone else see how filthy rich and happy you are, the fabric roof can be opened electrically at the simple push of a button. You don’t have to push the button yourself, don’t be silly, the driver can do that.

Opening the roof allows everyone to see the exquisite high-grade upholstery with diamond stitching, which comes in two-tone and is available in four trim colours. Of course you can match the colour of the fabric roof to the interior or exterior, and the exterior comes in a choice of four paint finishes. Although whatever combo you choose the G 650 will still look gaudy and tasteless.

7. It’s the car that thinks of everything

When you want to leave your luxury off-roader, don’t worry, you won’t have to exert yourself. There are electrically extending ‘entry aids’ to make it easier to exit the vehicle.

8. It’s a limited model

Just to make this car even more exclusive, only 99 of them will be produced, thankfully.

The Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet will get its debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show where its-no-doubt exorbitant price will be announced.
