THE MAJORITY OF Irish people have no issue with Michael D Higgins running for another term because of his age.
In a poll carried out by Ámarach Research for Claire Byrne Live and TheJournal.ie, 56% of people said that Higgins – who will be 77 at the time of next year’s election – is not to old to remain in the Áras. 38% said he is too old and 6% said they don’t know.
Last week, the president said he “is not ruling out” running for a second term next year.
The former Labour Party TD and arts minister has been popular with the electorate during his time in office.
A presidential election is due to be held in October 2018. If no-one contests the election, Higgins would be given a free run at a second term.
The vast majority of people – 76% – want him to run again, according to an Ireland Thinks/ Irish Daily Mail survey released today.
