3 Midweek Longreads: The tragic Hollywood scandal unveiled after 80 years

Longreads to savour or save.

IF YOU WANT a juicy longread to sink your teeth into, you’ve come to the right place.

Here are three to save for a moment of peace, or devour straight away.

1. Hollywood scandal

The tragic story of Loretta Young, her secret child with Clark Gable, and the real story that has only just been revealed.

(Buzzfeed, 31 mins)

The story was successfully concealed from the public, even as it circulated around Hollywood, at a muted level, for years — Young herself didn’t confirm it until after her death, via her posthumously released memoirs, in 2000. The child wouldn’t learn of her parentage until just before her wedding, and Gable never acknowledged her as his own.

2. Who is Columba Bush?

Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush fell madly in love with Columba Bush while on a high school trip to Mexico. Their love story.

(The Atlantic, 38 mins)

they seem to have very little in common. Take, for example, her husband’s lifelong career passion and the main preoccupation of his family for at least three generations. In 2001, after she’d been the first lady of Florida for two years, a reporter asked whether she and her husband talked about state policy. “Never,” she answered. “We talk about our daughter and sons, and cats and dogs and silly things.”

3. The escaped drug lord

The notorious drug lord El Chapo ( Joaquín Guzmán Loera) escaped last week – here’s the fascinating story behind his initial capture.

(New Yorker, 50 mins)

Guzmán married a teen-age beauty queen named Emma Coronel and invited half the criminal underworld of Mexico to attend the ceremony. The Army mobilized several Bell helicopters to crash the party; the troops arrived, guns drawn, to discover that Guzmán had just departed.
