Meet the globe-trotting new Chief Executive of Newstalk

Gerard Whelan has worked around the world and has extensive experience in media planning.

THE NEW CHIEF Executive of Newstalk has extensive management experience in brokering, trading and media planning.

The station announced today that Gerard Whelan is its new Chief Executive, saying that he comes with extensive business experience and that he has worked in the US, Europe and Asia.

He had a 15-year career with Kingspan plc as Senior International Manager and Director, and will take over his new role with Newstalk on 2 September.

Gervaise Slowey, Chief Executive of Communicorp Group said that Whelan is joining “at an exciting time in our business”.

She added:

Gerard has considerable experience in developing businesses around the world – this will be invaluable as the station continues to revolutionise the way in which content is delivered to a national audience. Gerard also has a strong track record in building businesses across a number of sectors.

Slowey added that with the company’s focus “firmly on maintaining Newstalk’s strong growth”, Gerard’s wide ranging expertise will be extremely beneficial to the station.

Last month, it was announced that Síle Seoige was to move on from the station, after her show was cancelled. Bobby Kerr stepped into her shoes with his show Down to Business, while Sarah Carey’s show Talking Point was moved to 1pm on Saturdays.
