Nissan says reports it is eyeing up Cork site are "just not true"
Local councillor Kenneth O’Flynn said that landing the plant would be “an amazing boost” for the city and county.
NISSAN HAS DENIED speculation it will move to Cork.
There had been suggestions around the Rebel County the car manufacturer would either build a new facility or move its Sunderland car plant to the old Amgen site in Carrigtwohill to the south of the city.
It had been reported that Nissan executives are due to visit the site in the coming weeks.
In response to a question from TheJournal.ie, the company said:
“That information is just not true.”
Local councillor Kenneth O’Flynn said that landing the plant would have been “an amazing boost” for the city and county.
“With facilities at the Port of Cork so suitable for exporting cars and Ireland as a member of the EU, it may make exceptional commercial sense for Nissan to look at Ireland for future growth.”
Nissan’s Sunderland plant is widely recognised as one of the most efficient in Europe and has turned out more than 8.5m vehicles since it opened in 1986. It employs 9,000 people and the Juke model is built there. The factory also makes Nissan’s Qashqai, Note and electrically-powered Leaf models.
