Motorbike crash in North West 200 sees spectator and rider in critical condition

The incident happened during the Superstock race yesterday.

A SERIOUS CRASH involving three motorcycles at the North West 200 race has seen two people seriously injured.

The incident happened during the Superstock race yesterday.

Rider Stephen Thompson and a female spectator are being held at Royal Victoria hospital in Belfast this morning, with their condition being described as “critical but stable” on the race’s website. 

Another rider, Austrian Horst Saiger, also sustained minor injuries in the incident and was taken to Causeway hospital.

The incident happened on the second lap of the race on a section of the course between York corner and the Mill Road Roundabout.

The race director, Mervyn Whyte, is quoted by the BBC saying that the two riders had been conscious when they were initially transferred to a hospital in Coleraine.

Thompson is from Crumlin in Co Antrim and has been a regular competitor in races in the UK and Northern Ireland.
