IF YOU’RE FAMILIAR with the southwest of Ireland, it would be surprising if you hadn’t toyed with the idea of making a permanent move there at some stage in your life. Between beautiful landscapes, delicious local produce and a chance to live by the ocean, it’s no wonder Cork and Kerry hold a special place in many hearts.

Located in Bonane, Co Kerry, about 10km from the thriving town of Kenmare, sits this 232 m² house that’s now on the market for €630,000.

Dating back to the Victorian era, the Old Presbytery (so called as it was once used by the church when the parishes of Bonane and Glengarriff merged) has four bedrooms and is set on about 3.5 acres with views of the surrounding Kerry landscape, nestled in the Sheen valley, with views of the Caha mountains.

Although it was built in 1897, The Old Presbytery was fully refurbished in 2015, which meant a re-slated and completely re-felted roof, new sash windows, a re-rendering of the home’s facade, a new boiler and an upgrade of the radiators. The refurb has left the property with a BER of C2, which is a rare find in a period home.

Yet, the renovation remained sympathetic to the true fabric of this house. It never lost its period features and still contains a curved front staircase, original floorboards, coving and high ceilings that help each room on the ground floor soak up as much natural light as possible.

Leading off the entrance hall are two lounges and then a joined kitchen and dining space. The ground floor is also home to a toilet and a handy utility room just off the back hallway.

The kitchen with its Belfast sink exudes farmhouse-style vibes while the tiles and pendant lights add a modern touch.

The interesting layout of this house means that there are two separate staircases that lead to the four bedrooms on the first floor – neither of which lead to a shared landing.

Two bedrooms and a bathroom are located to the front and the third and fourth bedroom, both with en suite shower rooms, are at the back which are accessed by the back stairs.

The garden is made up of a low maintenance lawn and it leads on to a wooded area behind the 3.5 acre site.

If extra accommodation, a workshop or a home office is in the next owner’s sights, there’s also a 48 sq m  large detached outbuilding that has electricity and is plumbed.

Kenmare is a heritage town in a great location. All of the things that put Cork and Kerry on the map sit nearby, from beautiful scenery and activities (on and off land) to great local produce and tourist attractions.

While many may dream of living in the southwest of Ireland, a home like The Old Presbytery in Milleens might make them consider a move more seriously.

The Old Presbytery, Milleens, Bonane, Co Kerry is on the market for €630,000 through Charles McCarthy.
