SINN FÉIN LEADER Mary Lou McDonald has written to the Taoiseach and the Ceann Comhairle seeking the recall of the Dáil next week to address the fuel crisis.
The Dáil is currently on holiday for a two-week Easter break, but McDonald said the government can’t “put its head in the sand” and abandon the public.
“Workers, families and key sectors of our economy are under huge pressure and there is silence from the government. People can’t be asked to wait for weeks for the Dáil to return. It should be recalled next week,” the TD said today.
“Fuel prices remain extraordinarily high and are very likely to rise further in the coming days, particularly diesel and home heating oil. This is putting huge pressure on families and workers and key sectors of our economy, who cannot deal with this unaffordable prices.”
“We have had days of silence from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael as the fuel crisis deepens. It will have been 20 days since the Dáil last met if the full recess is taken.”
Meanwhile, Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called for the “immediate recall” of the Dáil, highlighting in particular the high cost of green diesel, diesel and petrol.
The Agriculture Spokesperson said the situation has “worsened significantly in recent days”, saying the fuel crisis is now having a direct and severe impact on farming, housing, the cost of living and the wider economy.”
“Ten days ago I outlined the key issues we would face if the Government did not act. We are now seeing that crisis escalate in real time. We must act urgently. That is why the Dáil must be recalled immediately.”
The government has been contacted for comment.
