Switch on: 6 larger-than-life light fixtures to brighten up your home this winter

From large pendants to modern chandeliers.

WINTER IS THE perfect season to start rethinking lighting schemes.

With the darkness approaching as early as 5pm these days, we’re using the lights more, so we may as well love the ones we’re switching on.

The humble pendant is nice, but what about the really big fixtures that will kick off the design of a space? Here’s a round-up of statement lighting we’re swooning over on Instagram right now – the bigger the better, we say!

Crystal statement: A statement light with crystals will reflect what’s left of that natural brightness. @designerkati has hung one over the seating area in this bedroom to add emphasis to the space and help light bounce around the room.

Find similar statement lights with crystals at Littlewoods Ireland.

Multiple shades: When one shade just isn’t enough do like @colour_interiors_ltd does and play with sizes. Things grouped in threes (or other uneven numbers) work well and look effective in a stairwell so that both floors can benefit from the glow.

Find these Secto Design fixtures from Finnish Design Shop.

Use high ceilings: Ensuring your fixture is proportionate to the room is important. @whytelilja takes advantage of the high ceilings in this living room with a large modern chandelier that’s hard to miss – much better than a design that’s flush with the ceiling.

Larger than life: We love how @kerrylockwood replaces the concept of the typical standard lamp with a giant anglepoise that can be moved and manoeuvred to suit the space.

Focal point: Creating a focal point that draws in other elements from the room adds cohesiveness and a sense of intention in this living room shot by @lindsay_salazar_photography. Matching gold surfaces prove that this is a well-designed space.

Let the light shine: Sculptural forms that command the room are an instant talking point and add a real art gallery vibe to a design scheme. @darya_kopp keeps the walls white so this statement light really stands out.
