Currently, some transport services allow small animals to travel while sitting on their owner's lap Alamy Stock Photo

Do you think pets should be allowed on public transport?

The National Transport Authority recently ran a public consultation on the matter.

A PUBLIC CONSULTATION on a uniform policy for pets on public transport, ran by the National Transport Authority (NTA), closed last week.

The current rules around pets, with the exception guide and assistance dogs, differ across Transport for Ireland (TFI) services.

Animals of any kind (aside from the exceptions above) are not permitted on any Bus Éireann services. On Dublin Bus, similar restrictions apply but enforcement is left to the discretion of the driver. Go-Ahead bus services allow smaller dogs to sit on a passenger’s lap.

On Luas services, animals are permitted if they are kept in “appropriate enclosed pet carrier cases”.

Irish Rail allows small dogs to travel on a passenger’s lap, on a lead or in a pet carrier. Dogs listed on the restricted breeds list must be muzzled while onboard. Small cats are also allowed on train services, given that they travel in a secure carrier on the owner’s lap.

While the consultation period has ended, we wanted to ask for your thoughts.

So tell us: Should pets be allowed on public transport?
