A FINE GAEL TD is asking bin collection companies to schedule their collections before and after rush hour to help alleviate traffic congestion.
Barry Ward said he has also written to Housing and Local Government Minister James Browne asking him to engage with stakeholders to set up a timetable “to ensure bin trucks are not adding to rush-hour issues in towns and cities”.
Ward said he has been contacted “on a nearly daily basis” in recent weeks by residents who have said they were stuck behind a bin collection truck in their area before entering rush hour traffic.
He said Browne should consider restricting all bin collections during peak commute times in the mornings and evenings and limiting them “to times when our roads are less congested”.
“As someone who sits in daily congestion, either by bus or by car, this change would be extremely welcome, even if it reduced commutes by five or ten minutes.”
Ward added that time restrictions on bin collections are already in place in cities such as Brussels, Rome and Paris, where waste is generally collected “outside of peak traffic windows”.
So we want to know: Would you support time restrictions on household bin collections to avoid traffic congestion?
