From today, members of specialist regional garda units are allowed to permanently carry arms.

FROM TODAY, CERTAIN members of an Garda Siochána will be allowed to be permanently armed.

More than 120 uniformed gardaí are to be fully armed as part of a crackdown on gangland crime.

The force was founded almost 100 years ago, and this marks the first time that uniformed members are allowed carry guns full-time.

It will only be gardaí in specialist regional units who will be allowed to carry arms.
