Ryan Tubridy warns ‘terrestrial television is in trouble’ due to the ‘clip economy’

The former Late Late Show host said it would be a ‘great shout’ for Patrick Kielty to ‘make it more serious again’.

RYAN TUBRIDY HAS warned that “terrestrial television is in trouble” due to the “clip economy”.

He also encouraged current Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty to make the programme “more serious again”.

Tubridy made the remarks on the Morning Show with Kathryn Thomas on Dublin’s Q102.

He said that he still “follows” the Late Late and feels “still protective” of it.

Tubridy remarked that he doesn’t “really know what’s happening with the contract thing” and that it “seems to be money-related”.

Kielty’s contract with the Late Late Show recently came to an end and there appears to be an impasse in contract negotiations with RTÉ.

There have also been media reports that Kielty wants to tackle “serious subjects” on the show.

Tubridy said that Kielty wants to “make it more serious again” and added: “I think that’s a great shout.

“I think that the Late Late Show’s distinct identity was that it did have a town hall factor.

“People came there on a Friday to say, ‘what was that thing with the Healy-Raes, what was that thing with that poor person that that thing happened to’.

“I suspect that still happens, I don’t want to say that it doesn’t, but he seems to want to make it more serious as well as entertaining, and I think he should follow his nose on that one.”

Tubridy then remarked that “we live in a clip economy” and there is “no doubt” that “terrestrial television is in trouble” as a result.

“People will say, ‘I saw you had that guest on your Bookshelf podcast’, and I say, ‘what did you think of it?’

“And they’ll say, ‘oh, no idea, I just saw the clip’.

“But that’s okay, that’s a gateway into the show, broadly speaking, but I think terrestrial television is in trouble, there’s no doubt.”

When asked what he would change about the Late Late, Tubridy remarked that it “has to evolve with time”.

He pointed to James Corden’s stint as host of a programme also titled The Late Late Show in the US.

“I never saw one episode of it, but I saw ‘Carpool Karaoke’.

“People are watching TV, not like it’s a meal, but like it’s a tapas dish, and the show has to be kind of carved up and that must be really hard.

“I was just at the tail end before it became that, and people needed to clip-clip-clip-clip… that’s really hard.”

Meanwhile, the former Late Late Show host was speaking ahead of ‘The Bookshelf Live With Ryan Tubridy’ in the 3Olympia Theatre on 8 June.

He will be joined on the night by Katriona O’Sullivan and Baz Ashmawy.

Tubridy remarked that in his stage show, he is “very exposed” and that the audience sees a “different version” of him.

“Off air, I’m a much cheekier person, a much darker sense of humour, and I don’t mean ‘darker’ in a nasty way, but probably more ‘pub conversation’ person, and I think that’s the version you get on the stage.”

He added that since leaving RTÉ, he has become a “much more interesting version of myself”.

“It’s much more authentic, because when you work for an organisation, which I loved working for by the way, no jabs here, but you are tethered to it and you have to be a certain version of yourself.”
