Spanish unions agree to minimum transport service during strike

Air travel in and out of Spain will still be seriously disrupted on Wednesday.

A SPANISH STRIKE SET FOR 29 September looks likely to seriously disrupt the country’s air travel, despite assurances from unions that up to 40% of scheduled flights would go ahead.

Unions have made an agreement with the government to support between 20% and 40% of international flights during the general strike next week, Reuters reports.

Just one quarter of trains are expected to run, and up to 30% will be manned for rush hour.

Workers are protesting against austerity measures and labour reform, but employees in certain sectors are obliged by law to provide minimum services, according to Reuters.

It adds that it is unclear how many people will participate in the strike, as a Spanish national newspaper poll showed that while 58% supported the strike, only 9% said they would take part.
