Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty declared safe

Monument re-opened after earlier security scare.

THE STATUE OF Liberty has been reopened by security officials in New York after a smoke scare earlier.

The monument was evacuated after smoke was registered on a sensor around a lift inside it. The fire department attended the scene, but the detector had falsely indicated smoke.

Park officials who maintain the statue said that there was never any smoke, but several hundred visitors who were in the monument at the time were evacuated as a precaution.

Security concerns following 9/11 led to the statue being closed to the public for several years. The base was reopened in 2004, and the crown was reopened to visitors last year.
