GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: threatened hike in college registration fees spilts coalition; how much RTE pays its Late Late Show guests and the government offers housing support…to penguins.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your bacon and eggs.

1. #FEES: Speculation is mounting that a massive hike in college registration fees is likely in the budget. Fianna Fail and the Greens are said to be split over the planned increase. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is warning that such a move would result in large numbers of students dropping out.

2. #ROSCOMMON: Social workers connected to the Roscommon abuse case have told the Irish Times they made 30 requests for extra support to the HSE – to no avail. They claim they were told to “tone down their complaints” in case they were picked up by the media.

3. #RECESSIONOMICS: Over 2,000 people are on the waiting list for help from the Money Advice and Budgeting Service, MABS, according to the Irish Examiner.

4. #DRUMM ROLL: Former Anglo boss David Drumm is making €6,500 a month giving financial advice to company chief executives, the Independent reports. The figure is revealed in the court documents he has filed as part of his bankruptcy claim.

5. #CYSTIC FIBROSIS: The mother of a 24-year-old who died from cystic fibrosis at Waterford Regional Hospital in November 2006 has commissioned an independent report into the circumstances of her death, which claims she had to endure a cramped ward with blood-stained medical trays and urine-soaked bathroom floors, according to the Irish Daily Mail.

6. #TALK ISN’T CHEAP: RTE paid guests €250,000 to appear on the Late Late Show last year. The basic bill for staging the show for its first season – excluding Tubridy’s wages and staff salaries – came to €408,000. Among the guests who appeared are Samuel L Jackson, Liz Hurley and Miley Cyrus, the Independent reports.

7. #BANAMA REPUBLIC: It’s D-Day for NAMA, as a decision is due in the Commercial Court on developer Paddy McKillen’s case against it.

8. #NO FRILLS: Profits have surged in the Irish arm of McDonalds and at Ryanair.

9. #PENGUINOMICS The government has just offered housing support…to penguins. Social Protection Minister Eamon O’Cuiv has sanctioned spending €700,000 on a penguin sanctuary in Galway, the Irish Sun reports – at the same time that he has warned there will be widespread social welfare cuts in the budget.
