WITH PARTS DATING back to the 19th century, The Old Barracks in Kiltegan, Co Wicklow is a four-bedroom home with plenty of charm.
Once used as the local barracks, over the years the property – which sits on half an acre of south-west facing gardens – has been tastefully restored to create a home that’s filled with character. It retains quite a few of its original features, while a modern, light-filled extension houses the kitchen and dining room.
Stepping inside the 2,000 sq ft property, there’s original slate flagstone flooring in the hallway, utility room and guest bathroom. There are two reception rooms in the original part of the house, with solid French oak flooring and an open fireplace in each. A dual aspect in each room lets plenty of natural light in.
To the rear of the property is the country-style kitchen and dining room with travertine marble flooring. The handmade cabinets in the kitchen are a beautiful pistachio colour, while a sleek black Aga matches the counter tops. There’s also a Belfast sink, integrated dishwasher and free-standing fridge.
On a split level from the kitchen is the dining room, where there’s room for a table to seat at least six. A vaulted ceiling with a Velux window, plus two sets of French doors to the rear garden, flood the space with light. A utility room with fitted units and a guest bathroom complete the ground floor accommodation.
Moving upstairs, there are four double bedrooms, an en-suite bathroom and the family bathroom. Both bathrooms boast travertine marble flooring and underfloor heating for cold winter mornings, while the family bathroom benefits from a cast iron claw-foot bath.

While the dining room provides an attractive space to host and entertain a small party, a converted outbuilding makes for the perfect place to dine al fresco with a larger crowd. This area overlooks the garden, which is bordered by mature shrubs and trees, while its covered design means impromptu rain showers won’t catch anyone off guard.
As for location, The Old Barracks is a two-minute walk from Kiltegan National School, while there are a number of scenic country walks close by. In an hour and 10 minutes’ drive, you can be at Bray or Dublin city, while Naas town can be reached in 40 minutes.
