    Finance Minister Brian Lenihan announced that €6 billion of cuts and tax increases would be levied in the December Budget - and that he envisaged 100,000 people having to leave the country to seek work.

    Health Minister Mary Harney had red paint poured on her in a protest by a Dublin councillor. Undeterred by the attack, Minister Harney carried on with a sod-turning ceremony for a new health centre in Ballyfermot, Dublin.
  • Snake on a plane?

    Cork radio DJ Neil Prendeville could face Garda questioning after formal complaints were made, alleging that he engaged in a sex act - with himself - under partial cover of a magazine while on an Aer Lingus flight. The DJ has been reported as saying that he didn't remember the alleged incident of October 19 but that he had taken some Nurofen Plus for neck pain on the day.

    Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith announced a scheme to distribute free cheese in the run-up to Christmas to those "who are living in poor circumstances and are under pressure". The announcement led to a chorus of cheese-related jokes, in the vein of: "Can he really brie serious?"

    French and British prime ministers Nicolas Sarkozy and David Cameron signed a new defence and security treaty which will see the two countries conduct joint nuclear testing
  • Volcanic eruptions

    A small boy is comforted after being rescued from the fiery path of emissions from Mount Merapi in Klaten, Indonesia. Authorities had to widen the danger zone around the spewing crater to 20km after it erupted for a second time this week.

    Mystery surrounds the circumstances of a sudden landslide under a residential street in central Germany which swallowed a road and a local's car overnight.
