Delighted Carrick-on-Shannon locals welcome home Tidy Towns award
Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim won the coveted award on Friday.
RESIDENTS OF IRELAND’S tidiest town lined its streets at the weekend to welcome home its award.
Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim won the coveted award on Friday.
Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary presented the award to the town’s representatives at a ceremony in Croke Park.
The SuperValu TidyTowns Competition is organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development and had been sponsored by SuperValu since 1991.
Some 929 towns, made up of over 30,000 volunteers in all, were competing for the prestigious awards, the highest number of entries received in the competition’s history.
Announcing Carrick-on-Shannon as the overall winner, Minister Dara Calleary described it as a “special moment of immense pride for Carrick-on-Shannon and indeed the wider county of Leitrim”.
Delighted locals stood out in inclement weather to welcome the award home at the weekend.
It received a garda escort as it travelled up Carrick-on-Shannon’s Main Street.
Leas Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, Councillor Gary Prior, welcomed home Carrick-on-Shannon’s Tidy Towns Committee following their achievement.
