Two charged over sledgehammer robbery

Gardaí have charged two men in relation to a robbery at a Post Office in Tyrrellspass yesterday.

GARDAÍ IN WESTMEATH have charged two men in relation to yesterday’s post office robbery in Tyrrellspass.

Both men will appear before a Dublin court at 10.30am today.

The robbery occurred at the post office in Tyrrellspass, around 11 miles south of Mullingar, at about 9.30am on Friday.

The two men allegedly entered of the post office, armed with a sledgehammer and a knife, and threatened the staff on duty, demanding cash.

They left later with an undisclosed amount of cash. There were no injuries sustained by staff.

The men were later arrested in a follow-up operation and were detained at Mullingar Garda Station, under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939.

Cash and implements used in the robbery were also recovered.
