TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN paid to a mother who was killed in a car crash last night along with her 14-year-old daughter.

Sandra Herbert, 40, and her 14-year-old daughter Rachel were killed when a car left the road and overturned at Rathbaun, Cloghans, in Ballina.

Herbert worked for the Road Safety Authority in Ballina, whose employees today held a memorial service for their colleague and her daughter. RSA chief executive Noel Brett told RTÉ News that there were “tears and devastation, and absolute shock and disbelief” among Sandra’s co-workers.

“Our hearts are absolutely broken,” he said.

The women, both from Knockmore, Co Mayo, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three rear seat passengers are being treated in hospital for their injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

The road is currently closed as Gardaí carry out an examination of the scene.

Gardaí have asked any witnesses to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096-20560, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
