Man arrested in connection with deaths of two Castlebar brothers

The bodies of two men were found at their home at New Antrim Street this morning.

A MAN HAS been arrested in connection with the deaths of two men at their home in Castlebar.

The bodies of two elderly brothers were discovered at their home on New Antrim Street in the County Mayo town at around 7am today.

This evening, gardaí at Castlebar who are investigating the deaths arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with this investigation. He was arrested in Castlebar and is currently detained in Castlebar Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Earlier today, Taoiseach Enda Kenny condemned what he described as the “brutal and savage murder” of the two men. Their home is located close to Kenny’s constituency office and he said that he knew them well.

The men were aged 68 and 70 years of age.

The scene is being technically examined by the Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist has arrived at the scene.

Gardaí said that the area is busy and has many local businesses located on it.

They are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious in or around the New Antrim Street, Tucker Street and Linenhall Street area between 9pm last night and 7am this morning.

In addition, anyone who may have seen, spoken to or engaged with the deceased during this period are also asked to contact the gardaí.
