Two people arrested as part of garda probe into perjury allegations during McGregor civil case

Gardaí attached to the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation made the arrests this morning.

GARDAÍ HAVE ARRESTED two people as part of an investigation into allegations of perjury during the Conor McGregor civil case.

Gardaí attached to the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation made the arrests this morning.

A garda spokeswoman said that the man and woman, who are aged in their 30s, are detained at a station in Dublin. They can be held for a maximum of 24 hours excluding rest periods.

The arrests follow the referral by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in regard to sworn affidavits made in an appeal submission by counsel for McGregor. These affidavits made up one ground of appeal that was withdrawn before the Court of Appeal heard evidence. The other grounds of appeal heard were not successful.

So-called “fresh evidence” was due to be heard in the appeal taken by McGregor after Nikita Hand successfully proved his liability in regard to a rape at a Dublin hotel.

The Court of Appeal referred the affidavits to the DPP after potential perjury concerns were raised by Hand’s legal team.

Perjury is a criminal offence meaning to wilfully make a false statement while under oath in legal proceedings.

A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardaí have arrested a male and a female (aged in their 30s) in connection with an ongoing Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) investigation today.

“They are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, at Garda stations in the Dublin area. Investigations are ongoing. No further information is available at this time.”
