Girl, 2, and her two-month-old sister die in Galway road crash

The two young girls died after they were hit by a car on the hard shoulder near Tuam in Galway earlier this afternoon.

A TWO-YEAR-OLD girl and her two-month-old sister have died after they were hit by a car near Tuam in Co Galway this afternoon.

The two girls were were walking with their father along the hard shoulder on the N17 near the turn off for Dunmore at around 1.45pm this afternoon when the incident happened.

The pair were taken to University College Hospital Galway where they were pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, who was the sole occupant, and the father of the girls were also taken to the same hospital. Their injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

The N17 is currently closed near the turnoff for Dunmore as a garda forensic team carries out an investigation.

Diversions are in place.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to the incident to contact them Tuam Garda Station on 093 70 840, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
