The ban will impact ads on TV before the watershed and at any time online Shutterstock

The UK has introduced a ban on junk food ads – should Ireland follow suit?

The new regulations will take effect from today.

FROM TODAY, JUNK food advertisements have been banned on daytime television and online in the UK.

The ban targets products high in fat, salt or sugar and means that these ads can no longer be aired before the 9pm TV watershed or shown online at any time.

The British government has described the measure as a “world-leading action” aimed at tackling childhood obesity. The move follows other regulations, such as expanding the sugar tax to cover pre-packaged items including milkshakes and ready-made coffees.

It got us wondering – should Ireland do the same? Currently, junk food advertising is banned on television before 6pm, but there are no time restrictions for online advertising.

So, what do you think: Should Ireland introduce junk food ad regulations similar to those in the UK?
