How many cars are clamped in Dublin? That, and more, in the week in numbers

Plus: How many children have eaten liquid detergent tablets after mistaking them for sweets?

EVERY WEEK, TheJournal.ie offers a selection of statistics and numerical nuggets to help you digest the week that has just passed.

€8.35 million: The amount that UTV Ireland is predicting it will lose this year, up from a previous estimate of €4.2 million.

1.23 million: The number of households that have now registered with Irish Water, according to the utility company.

56,601: The number of vehicles clamped in the Dublin City Council area last year.

$40,000: The amount of money a US politician spent redecorating his office in the style of Downton Abbey. Aaron Schock resigned as a congressman this week.

€9,000: The amount that a Swedish man was ordered to pay to his ex-girlfriend in damages after he posted a video online of them having sex.

€9,000: That’s also the amount that One Direction had to pay the Philippine government as a ‘drug bond’ in order to be allowed to perform in the country. The money will be forfeited if a member of the band is caught using or promoting illegal drugs.

720+: The number of children who have eat liquid detergent tablets over the past four years after mistaking them for sweets, according to the National Poisons Information Centre.

399: The number of years ago that Miguel de Cervantes died. The body of the Spanish writer was discovered in a convent in Madrid this week.

150: The number of people employed by Dublin City Council to clean the city centre’s streets over a period of 24 hours on St Patrick’s Day.

96: The number of mobile phones that were seized from Irish prisons in the first few weeks of this year.

33: The percentage of Irish people who think the economy will improve in the coming year. 26% think it will worsen.

14: The number of years it has taken to identify the body of a 26-year-old man who died in the 11 September 2001 attacks in New York.

When did they tell you what apps to or not to use??? Apples agreement with google maps expired and they developed their own maps app. If google want to develop a third party app it’s up to them. Typical android user comment. Inferior hardware and software but you’ll convince yourself apple is evil because you don’t want to pay a bit more for better quality. At the end of the day the iPhone is an incredible piece of technology and built to a standard not seen before with personal electronics that’s in turn forced other manufacturers to step their products quality up a notch but still lag behind apple. Android is a copy of apple OS as none of them existed before 2007′s iPhone launch. I only ever see android users slating the iPhone in these comment threads but never the other way round. I guess iPhone users aren’t jealous enough to do so.

O – M – frickin G!!!! I urge you to go back over that comment there ‘I shit you not’. You completely contradict what you were trying to say to the point of embarrassment. And android copying iOS, sure they did….. Initially…. Before they overtook them n left them behind!! I have an iPhone but will fully acknowledge that android is way better. It’s actually Apple fanboys like yourself that turn a lot of people off buying an Apple product for fear of one day sounding like that!!!!
    Good Day. :)

@Olwyn that’s comment of the week. All that you said is so true plus what gets me is when apple act that a feature didn’t exist until it is on the iphone. Take “facetime” for example, a piece of crap LG phone I had, had it 2 years before the iphone!
As for the apple build quality, the first thing any person does is stick a big dirty cover & screen protector on it. It could be made from melted tayto packets and you couldn’t tell.
I guess apple fans like the shiny, shiny box…..

    I do shit you not.
As much as I love my iPhone the recent iOS upgrade has seriously affected the experience. To take what can be considered the best in class map app and replace it with the best in class comedy app is a retrograde step for apple. Also removing YouTube as an app for iPad is infuriating. How can this be considered in the best interest of the consumer. Apples arrogance has trumped any loyalty to its immense customer base. Frankly your point, well misses the point.

Why do people think apple removed YouTube because they thought it was in the best interest of whoever. YouTube paid to be included in the iOS before. They don’t now so they don’t get automatically put on the home screen!! Should apple include someone else’s app for free??? You can just download it like every other app. As for how different it is..that’s up to YouTube how their app functions.

Another point of interest if you decide to update to iOs 6.
It will take up approx. 2.5 Gb of space.
As far as most iPhones are concerned this is a major chunk of your memory used up.

But who would we be to go up against the bling brigade. They’ll never get it. Personally, I’m holding out to see the Sony Mint before I go for the S3.

Shit you not you are by far the most blinded commentator here. All we are pointing out is that apple have reduced the features on the phone. Google maps is an incredibly handy bit of kit. Remember it’s been lurking on your iPhone for years. I’m not interested in arguing about the merits of an android equipped phone. It’s the end user experience that counts and that has been affected negatively. Not that you care as you fiddle with with your bits.

@shityounot Sorry to burst your little fanboi bubble but the android os actually predates ios by a couple of years.
also you do realise that your superior hardware in your iphone is manufactured by samsung who use it in their own smartphones first months before letting apple near it.
I prefer android for lots of reasons but i dont look down my nose at people who choose apple (having a choice is great), unless like you they are ill-informed, fanboi morons who insist on spouting crap when really they havent a clue what theyre talking about.

People are making such a big deal about nothing. If google maps is your gripe on iOS then browse to maps.google.ie and save the maps icon to your phone. This will give you google maps on your phone. You always required web access with the old maps app. You loose street view but it was always a nice to have anyway. How many times did you seriously use it. If you are truly in need of a navigation map app go and buy a Tom Tom or another. The maps app was always Apples they got the data service from google so had every right to select a different data supplier.

You can do the same as the above with you tube. I used both if these apps frequently on previous iOS version and I really haven’t lost any sleep about the new version.

I have nothing against android I think it’s a great OS but people need to realise it doesn’t come fault free – it’s as buggy as any OS out there. It has taken google many many iterations to get their maps correct. Nothing works perfectly in version 1. Google apps for business has now been out there for about 6 years – bar gmail it’s still crap. So get over these small things its not as if you cannot leave the house without a maps app!

Niall while I agree with you that Apple are innovative, the main focus here is on maps. When a user gets notified about an update on their iPhone then I think they are expecting to see improvements after applying said update? The new maps app are a disappointing step backwards. The maps contain many inaccuracies, satellite imaging is less sharp/detailed vis a vis Google Maps. There’s no Street View and there’s unlikely to be anytime soon. The new 3D option is a nice gimmick but doesn’t really do much for me. These maps were not ready for prime time but they shipped anyway. This type of corner cutting is surely the antithesis of what the Apple brand stands for in the minds of most consumers? Who knows what Steve Jobs would say about this? Maybe he’d be apologetic or maybe he’d apply his “reality distortion field” to tell us “it’s not the map, you just want to go to the wrong place!”

I really don’t think you can call Android the ‘poor man’s ios’. This is a typically ignorant comment made by an Apple user. I made the change a long time ago and I’m so glad I did. I’m on my second Android phone now and I have even convinced other IPhone users to make the change. With the release of ios6 and the imminent arrival of the IPhone 5 it proves that Apple have fallen behind Android in the technology stakes. The Galaxy S3 and HTC one X are far superior devices to the IPhone 5 and they’ve been on the market a while now and when Jelly Bean SW is launched it will be another nail in Apple’s coffin. But none of this will matter to an Apple user because their products are reassuringly expensive and therefore the best. ;)

Apple are screwed if they keep down this road. Locking users into functionally is fine to a point but this is starting to get ridiculous. It serves it’s purpose though. My mother has an Iphone and doesn’t call me everyday for advise on how to use it and can use most functionality on it with ease. Android falls behind there.

That’s really where the advantages of IOS end though. I switched to Android last year and will never go back. Despite it being open source it hasn’t turned into a clusterf*ck and there are more apps now than when I first made the switch.

Until iOS devices can handle proper multitasking they’re not a viable option for me. My iPad usage has dropped drastically since I got my s3 despite having a much bigger screen… It’s just so much easier to get things done on Android. Will iPhone users be able to use turn by turn in the new GMaps app if it ever materialises? That’s another huge shortcoming there.

My phone is the only device I use that’s not Apple because I’m not a fan boy and I’ll use whatever I feel is the best device for any given job. The iPhone is a great piece of technology but let’s call a spade a spade, some of the functionality its missing is kind of unacceptable considering what the competition is pushing.
