Westport House was built in the 18th century and was once the home of Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley.
WESTPORT HOUSE HAS been the home of the Browne family since the 18th century, but its history dates back to the 1500s when pirate queen Grace O’Malley built a castle there.
Westport House, Westport, Co Mayo, is for sale for €10,000,000 with Ganly Walters via Daft.ie.
Set on 455 acres, Westport House has views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. The house is open to the public and has seen five million visitors so far.
The house was built in the 18th century and has a long gallery that runs the length of the house which was designed by Benjamin Wyatt, son of famed architect James Wyatt.
The front hall has the only surviving Richard Cassels-designed interior, which features a Doric Frieze and a coffered barrel-vaulted ceiling. It leads to a Sicilian marble staircase with metal balustrade work.
There is parquet flooring all throughout the ground floor and the library and ante-library contain a Cassels fireplace and George III mahogany bookcases.
The drawing room has a 19th century sky ceiling and ornate frieze which was incorporated during James Watts’ alterations to the house.
Downstairs you will find the servants’ kitchens, pantry, dining room and wine cellars.
Upstairs there are ten bedrooms, three dressing rooms and eight bathrooms. In the blue bedroom, designed by Wyatt, there is a coved ceiling with an oval rose.
The red bedroom with adjoining dressing room is the master bedroom and the Chinese bedroom has hand-painted Chinese wallpaper, with a willow pattern.
On the next level up there are three attic rooms which were once the children’s nursery. The north wing has a two bedroom apartment upstairs and the south wing has also has a two bedroom apartment, as well as a large activity room.
