Man arrested over hit-and-run that left councillor in serious condition

Willie Crowley was struck by a car yesterday evening.

A MAN HAS been arrested over a hit-and-run that left a Kildare councillor in critical condition.

Willie Crowley was struck by a car at 8.30pm last night at the junction of John’s Street and James Street. The car failed to remain at the scene and drove in the direction of Canning Place.

The independent councillor was seriously injured and was taken to Naas General Hospital where he remains this evening.

People have been posting messages of support on his Facebook page since news of the incident broke, with one saying: “Thinking and praying for a speedy recovery Willie, thoughts are with Claire and the family xx”.

This evening a 28-year-old man was arrested at a house in Newbridge and is currently being held for questioning.

Gardaí in Newbridge are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who may have been on the road around that time to contact them on 045 431212, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
