AN TAOISEACH ENDA Kenny has said that Ireland will be the first bailed-out euro area country to “wave goodbye” to the International Monetary Fund.
Speaking ahead of the second day of the Global Irish Economic Forum, Kenny told reporters that Ireland will beat Portugal and Greece in a race back to the markets.
According to RTÉ, Kenny said the Government believes it will begin selling Irish debt on the markets next year.
He added that Ireland will pass the next review when the Troika – IMF, European Commission and European Central Bank – send their inspectors in later this month.
The Irish Examiner reports that Kenny cited a drop in yields on Irish debt as an example of how Ireland is progressing well.
The remarks come ahead of former US president Bill Clinton’s address to the forum at Dublin Castle today.
His speech to about 300 delegates from the world of business, politics and culture will begin at 5pm and can be watched through the live stream (courtesy of RTÉ) below.
First up is a plenary session, “Promoting Irish Culture: Building on the Progress Since Farmleigh,” at 11.15am.
The Global Irish Economic Forum is an event hoping to seek ideas from the diaspora about how to stimulate Ireland’s economy.
