Cloverhill

Inter-county footballer in hospital after being injured on duty as prison officer

He was injured after intervening when one prisoner attacked another.

TWO PRISON OFFICERS were injured this morning after intervening when one prisoner attacked another inmate.

It happened at Cloverhill Prison at around 11:30 this morning during recreation. The other prisoner is bruised after the attack.

One of the officers sustained facial injuries and the other was taken to Tallaght Hospital with a shoulder injury.

The officer in hospital is an inter-county footballer for Roscommon.

The Irish Prison Service told TheJournal.ie that the prisoner who lashed out will be subject to disciplinary action.

Last month at the Prison Officers Association’s Annual Conference the POA called for the physical safety of its members to be a top priority.
