Man critical after being stabbed multiple times in Offaly overnight

That assault happened in Birr and a man has been arrested.

A MAN IS in a critical condition in hospital after he was stabbed multiple times in Co Offaly late last night.

The assault happened shortly after 1am at McAuley Drive in Birr with the victim described as being in his mid-20s.

He suffered a number of apparent stab wounds in the incident and was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore where his condition is critical.

A man in his early 20s was arrested close to the scene and is currently being held at Birr Garda Station where he can be held for up to 24 hours.

The scene is currently preserved and a garda technical team is on site carrying out an examination.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information on the stabbing, particularly those who reside at or were in the McAuley Drive, Townsend Street, New Road and Pound Street areas between 12.30am and 1.30am this morning.

Anyone who saw or heard anything unusual in the area is also being asked to contact gardai.
